8. EUROSTAT

The Statistical Office of the European Communities, Eurostat, is a satellite department of the European Commission. Its role is to provide up to date, reliable statistics for the whole EU area. These are needed by the Commission, the Council of Ministers and all those formulating policy and analysing developments both in the EU and worldwide.

Does EUROSTAT only produce written publications ?

No, EUROSTAT provides information in electronic media, including, increasingly, the Internet, to keep its information as topical as possible.

What sort of material is available ?

The information is divided into nine groups: general statistics, economics and finance; population and social conditions; energy and industry; agriculture, forestry and fisheries; external trade; distributive trade, services and transport; environment; and research and development.

What form does the information take?

Regular 'Euro-indicators' are produced on subjects such as unemployment and economic growth which contain the latest figures. Also special reports are published on various topics such as that on world trade which coincided with the WTO talks, mentioned on page 9.

Is all this available to the public ?
