Slovenia leads recycling league

New figures on domestic, S.M.E. (Small and Medium-Sized enterprises) and public sector waste disposal in the EU show that the total generated has gone down in recent years as recycling has increased. From a peak of 527kg. in 2002 municipal waste had decreased to 475 kg. per person in 2014. The proportion of waste recycled or composted went up from 17% in 1995 to 44% in 2014. There are wide variations among Member States with Romania producing only 254 kg. per inhabitant compared to Denmark’s whopping 759 kg. However 27% of this is recycled as opposed to a mere 5% in Romania. Top of this particular class is Slovenia where 49% of waste is reprocessed with Germany on 47% way ahead of bottom of the table Latvia (3%).

U.S.A. still top E.U. trade partner as Chinese imports continue to rise

Statistics for 2015 published by Eurostat show that the extended decline in the volume of commerce between the U.S.A. and the E.U. has been reversed while the China trade continues its long march upwards, having doubled since 2002. Last year €619 billion worth of goods crossed the Atlantic while trade with second-placed China totalled €521 billion. The relationships are balanced in opposite directions as the U.S. receives 21% of E.U. exports while only 14% of imports come from that country; by contrast China accounts for 20% of imports but buys just 10% of E.U. products. Third-placed Switzerland has nudged ahead of Russia whose share has declined sharply in the last two years. For all but 5 of the E.U. Member States Germany was the no.1 export market and it also provided the most imports for 19 out of the 28 countries. Only the Netherlands did not source more than half of its imports from other E.U. members and only Malta and the U.K. exported more to the rest of the world than to their European partners.
