Construction activity continues to decline in EU

The building sector is a still a long way from recovery from the economic slump that started in 2008, according to statistics from Eurostat. Latest figures show a 0.9% decrease in production across the EU from October to November with the UK (-2.7%) and Italy (-3.4%) doing worst. Compared with a year ago there was a 5.9% drop; Slovenia recorded a fall of over 20% while Italy and Portugal were nearly 18% down.

Crisis inflates social spending

Eurostat have published statistics for spending on social benefits in the EU up to 2010. The economic crisis had the effect of increasing spending in all EU states between 2007 and 2009 although some countries registered a slight fall in 2010. Overall there was a 10% rise over the whole period but unemployment expenditure went up by a third. There were the usual large variations between Member States. Whereas France contributed 33.8% of its GDP to benefits, Romania stumped up only 17.6%. Pensions top 60% of spending in Poland and Italy while sickness and disability  head the Irish bill. Luxembourg pays the most per person in gross terms.
