Views on the resignation of the Commission

Jacques Santer

Neil Kinnock

We are living through one of the most difficult periods the European Union has encountered in its history. It has also been the most testing period for myself and the other members of the outgoing Commission, both professionally and personally. We have supported the Committee of Independent Experts throughout its work. And we have now acted swiftly and decisively on its findings by resigning collectively. Our decision was a painful but necessary one to preserve the Commission as an institution, and the EU as a whole.

I think the union would have been in difficulties if the commission last night had decided not to resign and use the next 10 days for explanation because that would have prolonged the difficulties. By doing what we did last night we made the clean break. It does mean that commissioners will continue, as I will, until formalities and decisions are made.
