EUROPEAN REVIEW
The fifty-fifth Eurobarometer survey which examines opinion in the EU Member States has published its preliminary findings. Participants were given seven statements on key EU issues and asked to agree or disagree with them. The figures in the table below show the percentages in each country that agreed. Support for the euro shows an increase in nearly all countries, perhaps reflecting greater knowledge as its inauguration approaches. However the responses to the other questions are patchier with membership and its benefits being slightly less popular in most Member States.

The 'Eurostat Yearbook 2000' included those countries who are candidates for membership of the European Union. Here we present the figures for unemployment, which show wide variation from country to country, as well as two sets of numbers concerning the present EU Member States. These show that Italy had the highest ratio of cars to people in 1996 and Luxembourg emitted the most tonnes of Carbon Dioxide per person in 1997.
