Two views on Euro entry

General Secretary John Monks

Chancellor Gordon Brown

Some argue the decision can be put off. I say to them that every day that passes that we stay out, our position is weakened in the European Union. If you pursue 'go it alone' policies in a volatile and increasingly globalised world you are more vulnerable than being in a block of countries which together represent the largest economy in the world. Campaigning for early entry at a competitive exchange rate must be our collective priority and we shall be telling the new Government this.

Our approach is, and will continue to be, considered and cautious - one of pro-euro realism. Pro-euro because, as we said in 1997, we believe that - in principle - membership of the euro can bring benefits to Britain. Realist because to shortcut or fudge the assessment, and to join in the wrong way or on the wrong basis without rigorously ensuring the tests are met, would not be in the national economic interest.
