Social Protection in Europe: Facing up to Changes and Challenges

A 450 page compendium of articles which were originally prepared a Conference on Social Protection in Europe held in November '96. The book deals with the relationship between employment and social protection, the financing of social security systems, unemployment benefits and health care provision. The concluding chapter contains a discussion of future prospects and possible solutions to the problems which are currently arising and a summary of the panel discussion held at the end of the conference. The book is available in English, priced BEF 800.

Social Pacts in Europe

With three chapters setting the context and nine accounts of national experiences with social pacts. The pacts - partnerships between governments, unions and employers - enjoy qualified success according to the authors and while they preserve jobs, their "positive impact on the employment situation is the exception rather than the rule".

Jobs First

Argues that trade unions are not opposed to modernisation of the labour market, provided it helps preserve and create jobs. It Contains reports from 13 countries (including the US) on issues like part-time work, career breaks, continuing training and into-work programmes.

Eurostat Key Data on Employment

(available from the Project) is a compilation of statistics released in November 97. They include employment rates in member states; social contributions by employees and employers; long-term unemployment; qualifications of school leavers; proportion of employees on fixed term contracts, and many more.

Transfer

(European Review of Labour and Research) the quarterly of the European Trade Union Institute is out now. This latest issue is about the role of trade unions in the 21st century. The challenges facing unions in the '80s and '90s are examined &emdash; employer restructuring, neo-liberal policies, the failure as they see it of unions to come up with counter measures. Developing a New Field of Trade Union Activity

Teaching pack

Pat Hughes is the co-ordinator of the trade union European projects, of which this is one. Pat has years of teaching experience in the TU movement and is an expert on European affairs. Pat Hughes, with support from the Commission, has teamed up with Allan Burnett, editor of InfoBASE Europe - an electronic news service and database - to produce a teaching pack on Europe for trade unions. With fact files and activities, it also contains details of over 100 funding programmes. The pack costs £14.50 plus p&p but discounts can be had for bulk orders.
